Berewuleng Women’s Football Club has alleged that one of its officials was physically assaulted by the president of TMT FC following a league match.
In a statement on Monday, Berewuleng FC said its technical team member, Sanjally Choi, was allegedly struck in the eye by TMT FC president Omar Saidykhan at Basori immediately after the match.
The incident was reported to the Madinaba Police Station, where statements were taken from both Choi and Saidykhan. Berewuleng FC said its management and security officer decided to temporarily suspend legal proceedings against Saidykhan, pending a ruling by the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Organising Committee.
“Our next line of action in legal proceedings depends entirely on the outcome of the Organising Committee’s decision on the matter,” the club said. Choi is receiving medical treatment and remains under observation by ophthalmologists for possible vision-threatening injuries.
The club condemned what it described as acts of physical aggression and verbal abuse, emphasizing that sport should promote unity, respect, and positive engagement. Berewuleng FC also raised security concerns, noting chaotic scenes at the end of regulation time involving intruders on the field. The club urged the GFF to strengthen security measures to protect players and officials in women’s football.
Meanwhile, TMT Football Academy issued a statement contesting Berewuleng FC’s account. The academy alleged that before kickoff, Choi approached TMT players and Saidykhan while entering the pitch and threw an unidentified substance at them, causing immediate adverse health effects. Saidykhan reportedly suffered severe reactions, including vomiting, and continues to receive medical attention. Several players also required treatment, with one admitted to Brikama Health Centre.
TMT said it possesses video evidence showing the health effects suffered by its president and players. The academy claimed that after the match, Choi confronted Saidykhan outside the TMT dressing room, which TMT described as a reaction to the earlier incident. Statements were taken at Madinaba Police Station, and TMT said the complaint was subsequently withdrawn.
The academy accused Berewuleng FC of issuing a “misleading and one-sided” public statement and warned that further attempts to tarnish Saidykhan’s reputation would result in legal action. TMT reaffirmed its commitment to peace, fairness, and the development of women’s football in The Gambia.
