VAA Unites Gambian Artists in National Art Showcase

By Yunus S Saliu

The Visual Arts Association of The Gambia (VAA) will stage the Ndaje National Visual Art Exhibition, a national showcase celebrating Gambian culture, heritage, and unity through visual arts. The exhibition opens on 20 January 2026 at the Yunus Emre Institute in Senegambia.

According to the VAA Secretary General, Kebba Sallah, the exhibition aims to unite artists from diverse backgrounds and ethnic groups under a shared passion for art and national identity. He explained that the name Ndaje symbolizes this unity, bringing together artists and the public to experience Gambian culture through creative expression.

The exhibition will feature works by more than 30 Gambian-based artists, including both established and emerging painters and sculptors. Visitors can view a wide variety of artworks and have the opportunity to purchase original pieces.

Due to the number of participating artists, the exhibition will take place at two venues. After its official opening on 20 January at the Yunus Emre Institute, it will continue on 21 January at the Key Art Gallery in Kanifing. Kebba noted that the decision was also influenced by the limited capacity of a single venue to accommodate all artworks.

“This exhibition is a celebration of culture and heritage through art,” Kebba said, adding that it provides a platform for senior and junior artists to inspire one another and promote the growth of visual arts in The Gambia.

He emphasized that the Ndaje exhibition helps preserve Gambian heritage by encouraging artistic expression rooted in local culture, traditions, and shared history. Through this initiative, VAA seeks to strengthen national identity while promoting creativity across communities.

The exhibition will run for 21 days at both venues and is open to the public. While no side events are planned, the focus will remain on showcasing and selling artworks, providing artists with exposure and economic opportunities.

Kebba urged the public to support the visual arts sector by recognizing and nurturing artistic talent within homes and communities, noting that public engagement is crucial for the development and sustainability of the arts in The Gambia.

The Ndaje National Visual Art Exhibition is expected to attract art enthusiasts, collectors, and members of the public interested in experiencing Gambian culture through visual storytelling.
