A Tribute to Professor Steffen Woldemar John

Tribute

From the People of The Gambia, the Community of Salikenni, and the Family of the Late Dr. Lamin Kebba NaFa Saho

The people of The Gambia, the community of Salikenni, and the family of the late Dr. Lamin Kebba NaFa Saho have paid tribute to Professor Steffen Woldemar John, a distinguished German surgeon and philanthropist, whose life was marked by service, compassion, and enduring friendship.

Professor John dedicated his career to healing and humanitarian work. In partnership with Dr. Lamin Kebba Saho, a respected statesman from Central Badibu, he played a pivotal role in establishing a hospital that has since served thousands, providing hope and dignity to families across Central Badibu and beyond.

His connection with Salikenni was particularly profound. Professor John treated all people equally, offering his expertise, time, and resources to improve healthcare access and outcomes. His efforts have left a lasting imprint on the Gambian healthcare landscape.

Professor John passed away peacefully on 16 January 2026 in Bochum, Germany, surrounded by his family. While his passing is deeply mourned, his legacy endures in the lives saved and the healthcare institutions he helped strengthen.

“Salikenni will never forget you. The Gambia will never forget you,” the tribute concluded.

Personal Tribute from Sir Farimang Saho, President, Confederation of Gambian Industry

Sir Farimang Saho described Professor John as a man of profound humility and dedication, despite his distinguished career and accomplishments. He noted that Professor John lived simply, wore the same trousers for over a decade, and maintained only three laptops since the 1980s.

Together with his wife, Professor John founded the Medical Aid Program for The Gambia in 1986, supporting health facilities including the Salikenni Health Centre and the former Royal Victoria Hospital. His commitment to Salikenni remained unwavering until his final years.

Sir Farimang recalled personal experiences with Professor John, highlighting his generosity and trust. At a critical moment in Sir Farimang’s education, Professor John assisted with a scholarship application fee, enabling further academic opportunities.

“A reliable and compassionate man has fallen. Yet even in passing, Professor John’s humility, generosity, and commitment to service will continue to inspire me and many others,” he said, extending condolences to the John family.
