UDP Spokesperson Downplays NPP’s By-Election Gains

By Kemo Kanyi

Karamo Njie, the North Bank Region spokesperson of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has downplayed the National People’s Party’s (NPP) dominance following recent by-elections.

He was quick to reaffirm UDP’s foothold in the country’s political landscape.

Speaking on the outcomes of the by-elections held in the West Coast and Lower River Regions, Njie said the NPP had only recorded narrow victories in Bantanjang and retained its seat in Kaiaf. He emphasized that the combined votes of opposition parties surpassed those of the NPP, signalling setbacks rather than successes for the ruling party.

“In Bantanjang, opposition votes outnumbered the NPP’s. In Kaiaf, UDP improved on its past performance. How is that an achievement for the NPP? It’s clearly a setback,” Njie told The Voice on Thursday.

He also alleged that the NPP attempted to influence Alkalolu leaders in both wards to secure votes, and called on them to remain neutral, focusing on their traditional social roles rather than political matters.

Njie urged UDP members to continue mobilizing and strengthening the party while avoiding tribal sentiments, stressing that unity and grassroots engagement are crucial ahead of the 2026 national elections.
