The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has won by-elections in the Bantanjang and Kaiaf wards of the Brikama Area Council (BAC) and Mansa Konko Area Council, respectively.

The elections, held over the weekend, saw the NPP retain its seat in Mansa Konko while winning the councilor seat in Bantanjang, defeating an independent candidate seeking to keep the seat following the demise of the previous councilor.

Reacting to the results, the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) issued a congratulatory message to the NPP. The party praised the residents of Kaiaf and Bantanjang for peacefully exercising their democratic right to vote and for contributing to the strengthening of local governance and democracy in The Gambia.

“While elections are competitive by nature, they remain an essential pillar of our democratic process. The UDP remains committed to constructive political engagement, accountability, and the pursuit of policies that improve the welfare of all Gambians,” the party said in a statement.

The UDP also wished the newly elected councilors success in their duties and urged them to serve their communities with integrity, transparency, and dedication to development.
