Gambian politician and retired businessman Pa Njie Girigara has described the United Democratic Party (UDP) as the second-largest political party in the country, asserting that no opposition leader currently commands a comparable following.

In a statement obtained by this medium, Girigara, who clarifies that he is not a UDP member, said the party’s nationwide mobilization efforts demonstrate its strength and influence.

“If you see UDP wanting to lead a coalition, they are right,” he said, pointing to the size and consistency of UDP campaign crowds. He noted that the party has historically placed second in elections and predicted a similar outcome in 2026.

Girigara also says political competition in The Gambia has increasingly shifted toward individual popularity, adding that UDP, supported by strong grassroots networks, is well-positioned. He commended party militants for contributing their own funds and sponsoring mobilization activities.

“Gambian politics is now the politics of personality. UDP is the one on the ground…they are telling the truth, and that’s a fact,” he said.

The comments come amid speculation over potential opposition alliances ahead of the 2026 presidential election. Analysts say they could intensify debate over UDP’s role in the opposition landscape.

Girigara criticized rival parties for relying heavily on social media and media appearances, contrasting this with the UDP’s nationwide tour, which he said attracted large crowds.

He concluded that UDP’s capacity for mass mobilization remains unmatched among opposition parties. “Love it or hate it, UDP occupies the ground apart from NPP, and that’s the truth,” he said.

Girigara’s remarks highlight UDP’s continued influence and suggest that other opposition parties may need to strengthen grassroots networks or consider alliances to effectively challenge the party in the upcoming elections.
