Councillor Bubacarr M. Kanteh of Kartong Ward has called on members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to reaffirm their loyalty to the party’s leadership following the conclusion of its nationwide tour aimed at engaging voters.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kanteh urged party members and supporters to place their trust in the leadership of UDP leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, whom he described as committed to national service, honesty, and accountability.
He warns that political betrayal, particularly by former party members now aligned with other political camps, undermines democratic values, erodes public trust, and weakens community cohesion.
Kanteh cited the experience of seven former UDP National Assembly Members (NAMs) who defected from the party, noting that five of them lost their seats in the 2022 parliamentary elections after voters withdrew their confidence.
According to him, the electorate rejected those representatives because they no longer trusted them to safeguard national interests in the National Assembly.
The Kartong councillor also cautioned current local government officials who have distanced themselves from the party, stressing that political betrayal carries consequences, but appealed for restraint, non-violence, and peaceful political engagement.
He rejected claims that the UDP had become exclusionary, stating that the party has, for over three decades, provided opportunities for young people to grow into leadership roles both nationally and internationally.
Kanteh further expressed appreciation to UDP supporters, militants, and financiers for their dedication, sacrifices, and contributions during the party’s 11-day nationwide tour, including the rally held in Wellingara, Kombo North.
He concluded by calling on the party leadership, executive, and supporters to remain united, demand accountability and transparency, and continue to uphold democratic principles through peaceful and lawful action.
