Gambia Passes First-Ever Personal Data Protection and Privacy Law

According to a press release from the National Assembly, the country has passed the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Bill, 2025, marking its first comprehensive legal framework to safeguard citizens’ personal information. The legislation, approved during the Assembly’s Third Ordinary Session, is designed to protect privacy rights, strengthen digital governance, and build public trust in Gambia’s digital transformation.

The Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services praised Members of Parliament, the ICT and Education Committee, and technical teams for their careful review and dedication during the legislative process. Officials said the Bill aligns with international best practices while addressing local realities.

The press release also acknowledged the contributions of civil society organizations, development partners, and other stakeholders, whose input helped refine the law to balance innovation with robust data protection.

“With the passage of this Bill, Gambia has taken a decisive step toward promoting digital rights and ensuring personal information is handled responsibly,” the release said. The law establishes clear responsibilities for organizations that collect, store, or process personal data, while also providing mechanisms for accountability and recourse in cases of breaches.

The Government emphasized its commitment to effective implementation, including strengthening institutional capacity and raising public awareness to ensure data protection becomes part of governance and public service.
