The Patriotic Alliance for System Transformation Emancipation through Functionalism (PASTEF The Gambia) has strongly condemned what it described as the unconstitutional and forceful removal of Momodou Ceesay, the Auditor General of the Republic of The Gambia.
According to PASTEF’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mayorra Sidibeh, the government announced on 10th September 2025 that Mr. Ceesay had been appointed Minister of Trade, Industry, and Employment. However, a follow-up release on 11th September clarified that he had declined the position. Despite this, the government moved ahead to appoint Mr. Amadou Cherno Sowe as the new Auditor General. Shockingly, on 15th September, Mr. Ceesay was forcibly removed from the National Audit Office by members of the police force.
PASTEF argues that this removal lacked any constitutional or legal basis. “There was no resignation or lawful dismissal in accordance with due process, meaning there was no vacancy to fill,” Sidibeh said, labeling the new appointment procedurally defective and legally untenable.
The party underscored that the Auditor General’s Office, established under Section 158 of the 1997 Constitution, is a constitutionally protected institution. Section 160(7) further guarantees its independence, shielding it from interference by any authority.
Although the President has the power to appoint the Auditor General, PASTEF reminded that Section 158(5) of the Constitution and Sections 16(4)-(7) of the National Audit Office Act, 2015, outline strict procedures for lawful removal. “Any action taken outside of this framework is a violation of the Constitution and undermines the rule of law,” the statement emphasized.
PASTEF decried the government’s actions as a direct assault on public accountability and constitutional order. The party emphasized that undermining independent oversight institutions like the National Audit Office damages public trust and weakens the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
PASTEF is demanding the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Mr. Ceesay and urging the Executive to respect the principles of separation of powers, constitutional integrity, and good governance.
“This matter has far-reaching consequences for The Gambia’s democratic credentials and must be addressed with the urgency and seriousness it deserves,” the statement concluded.
