The Gambia Police Force (GPF) and families of the officers killed in the Sukuta Traffic Lights shooting, late Pateh Jallow and Sang J. Mendy, on September 12, 2023, gathered on Thursday at the Anti-Crime Unit Headquarters in Banjulinding to pay tribute to them for the second time.

Delivering a keynote address on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, AIG Pateh Jallow said, “Two years may have passed, but the pain of that day remains fresh in our hearts. On that fateful day, in the line of duty and in service to this nation, our officers were ambushed in an act of senseless violence, an act that not only wounded one of our own physically but shook the very foundation of the values we uphold as a law enforcement body.”

He stressed that the Anti-Crime Unit was established to combat rising criminal threats, restore public confidence, and safeguard communities. “That mission remains unchanged, and we remain unshaken in our resolve to maintain law and order in The Gambia.”

AIG Jallow also saluted the bravery of W/Sgt. Ansey Jawo, who sustained injuries during the attack. “We salute your courage, resilience, and continued dedication. You are a living reminder of the risks our men and women in uniform face daily and the price they are willing to pay to protect the rest of us,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of the Anti-Crime Unit, Momodou Sowe, described the fallen officers as embodiments of courage, dedication, and service. He urged colleagues to draw inspiration from their sacrifice. “Let us reaffirm our commitment to our mission. Let their sacrifice inspire us to work tirelessly for the safety and well-being of our communities, and always recall that together, we can build a brighter future for The Gambia,” he stated.

The solemn event was marked by prayers and the laying of wreaths in honor of the departed, with families of the slain officers joining the police in remembrance and solidarity.
