Fintech and mobile money operators in The Gambia continued to expand rapidly in the first half of 2025, reinforcing progress in financial inclusion.
According to the Governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Mr. Buah Saidy, registered accounts stood at 4.5 million by the end of June 2025. Of these, 2.4 million were active.
“Transaction volumes were also strong. Cash-in transactions amounted to D20.4 billion, while cash-out transactions totalled D20.8 billion in the same period,” he said.
The Central Bank Governor says this growth reflects the increasing use of digital financial services and has underscored the need to strengthen oversight.
“Efforts are underway to enhance cybersecurity resilience and modernise payment systems infrastructure to ensure that the rapid growth of fintech and mobile money translates into deeper and more sustainable financial inclusion,” he added.
Mr. Saidy noted that these developments in fintech and mobile money form part of broader progress in financial inclusion and complement ongoing improvements in the banking and microfinance sectors
