Members of the National Livestock Owner Association (NALOA) have donated food and cash worth D30,000.00 to the family of slain herdsman, Birom Jallow in Sare Omar, Niamina District.
The 15-year-old Birom, a herdsman, was tragically shot and killed a month ago by a farmer in Dongongroba village, Lower River Region.
The donation, which was contributed individually by NALOA members, included: seven 50kg bags of rice, a 50kg bag of sugar, a bag of onions, a 20-liter gallon of oil, a package of OMO detergent, and D10,000 in cash.
The presentation was led by NALOA President, Ebrima O. Jallow, who was accompanied by other members from both the national and regional levels. Before the official handover, imams and elders recited verses from the Holy Quran to pray for the departed soul of Birom. The event was emotional for the family, who were still grieving the brutal and “inhuman” nature of the boy’s death.
Birom was killed by a farmer with a local gun and his body was buried on the same farm, reportedly due to the boy’s cattle straying into the farmer’s crops.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the imam of Sare Omar commended NALOA for its benevolent gesture, calling it a true reflection of Islamic values. He praised the association’s commitment to the welfare of herdsmen in the country and urged them to continue their good work. The imam also applauded President Ebrima O. Jallow for fostering unity and confidence within the organization.
The Chief of Jarra East, Ansumana Kanagi, also expressed his appreciation, stating that he was not surprised by the support. He praised Mr. Jallow as a leader who prioritizes national interests and the welfare of livestock owners. Chief Kanagi encouraged NALOA to redouble its efforts, noting that nation-building requires significant commitment.
For his part, a visibly emotional Ebrima O. Jallow said the purpose of the trip was to show solidarity with the family. He highlighted that the items were a result of individual contributions from NALOA members and commended the people of Sare Omar for their patience following the incident which was reported at the Bureng Police Station. Mr. Jallow spoke extensively about NALOA’s role in promoting peace between herdsmen and farmers, assuring the community that the association would continue to collaborate closely with security forces and the Ministry of Agriculture to prevent similar conflicts.
