Petty traders along Old Yundum Coastal Road Market have raised eyebrows over the unhygienic conditions of their open-air market, which they describe as “unsafe and unhealthy.”

They say the poor environment is a breeding ground for sickness and mosquitoes, posing a threat not only to their businesses but also to pedestrians and students.

Speaking to the Voice Newspaper, Fattoumatta Jallow, a vegetable seller, expressed her frustration at having to sell her goods while sitting in stagnant, dirty water. She explains that while the conditions are unpleasant, she has no other option but to earn a living and support her family. Jallow appealed to Brikama Area Council and President Adama Barrow’s administration to construct the road next to the market, which would alleviate the difficulties they face during the rainy season.

Binta Badjie, a fishmonger, called on the Brikama Area Council to install more dustbins in and around the market to help manage waste. She also urged President Barrow’s administration to revive “Operation Clean the Nation,” a community cleaning initiative locally known as ‘set setal’, to encourage everyone to take part in keeping the environment clean.

Another trader, Blessing John, described the Old Yundum Market as “dirty and disgusting,” noting that some people clean up while others do not care. John also pleaded with the president’s administration to control the price of goods for the benefit of all Gambians. She advised both local and foreign traders to remain diligent in their work to overcome their challenges.
