GAF’s Swift Dismissals Show Discipline Must Prevail

The recent dismissal of seven personnel from the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) marks a serious and sobering moment not only for the military but for national security and public trust. The internal investigation, which revealed deliberate misconduct involving unauthorized naval operations, receipt of illicit benefits, and direct compromise of operational integrity, raises grave concerns about infiltration and collusion within the ranks.

The GAF’s decision, though drastic, is both commendable and necessary. Discipline is the backbone of any professional military. When members of the Armed Forces betray that discipline, especially in roles as sensitive as naval operations, they threaten not only their comrades but the very security of the nation. The individuals implicated in aiding operations acted in clear violation of their oath and responsibilities.

That this conduct was premeditated and coordinated, complete with material incentives, should alarm us all. It is a painful reminder that even within our most trusted institutions, vigilance must remain constant.

By acting decisively and transparently, the GAF sends a clear message: the military is not a shield for corruption or criminal networks. The public must take comfort in knowing that our armed forces are willing to root out wrongdoing, even from within.

This dismissal should now serve as a turning point, a moment not only for discipline but for systemic reinforcement. Internal checks, ethical training, and oversight must be strengthened so such breaches are caught early, or better yet, prevented altogether.

Our national security depends not only on strength but on integrity. The GAF has taken the right step. Now, the nation must stand behind efforts to ensure it is never needed again.
