Two Remanded at Mile 2 Over Charges of Common Nuisance

By: Sering Mass Jallow

Two men, Masseh Salmeh and Omar Jagne were on Tuesday remanded at Mile Two Prison following their appearance before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court charged with common nuisance.

Sargent E.M. Jallow, representing the Inspector General of Police, told Magistrate A. Manneh that the two were charged with common nuisance contrary to Section 137(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025.

According to the particulars of the offense, on or about August 15, 2025, at Kololi Tavan in the Kanifing Municipality, the accused allegedly obstructed and caused annoyance, danger, and inconvenience to the public in exercise of their common rights. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges with the court recording their pleas.

The prosecution stated that the arrest of Salmeh and Jagne followed a series of reported incidents in Kololi Tavan, including nuisance, robberies, and attacks on school-going children. Neither accused was represented by legal counsel in court.

Omar Jagne, the first accused, requested bail, citing that he left behind a wife and a six-month-old child who is unaware of his whereabouts since his arrest. Masseh Salmeh, a Senegalese national, also requested bail, citing health concerns, including a persistent toothache since his detention.

The prosecution objected to both bail requests, arguing that Jagne could interfere with witnesses and that Salmeh might flee the country, given his nationality.

Magistrate Manneh noted that the charge is bailable but emphasized the community’s right to live in peace. She remanded both accused at Mile 2 State Central Prison pending the appearance of prosecution witnesses and further determination of bail conditions. The case is adjourned to August 25, 2025.
