Three Stand Trial For Public Disturbance

Three accused persons Tuesday, 12th August 2025, appeared before Brikama Magistrates’ Court on three counts related to public disturbance in Busumbala Kamudampang, West Coast Region.

Appearing before Magistrate K.B. Sambou, the first accused, Buba Bojang, is an adult Gambian from Latriya, while the second and third accused both are minors (names withheld) and so treated as alleged child offenders from Latriya.

When asked by the court as to which language they prefer all three opted to have proceedings conducted in Wolof.

Prosecuting officer Sgt. 4624 A. Jallow, representing the Inspector General of Police, informed the court that the two minors could not enter pleas without legal representation.

On count one, the trio faces a charge of prohibition of conduct bordering on to a breach of the peace contrary to Section 9 of the Public Order Act, for allegedly using threatening, abusive, or insulting words and behaviour in public on 3rd August 2025.

On count two, they are charged with affray contrary to Section 75 of the Criminal Offences Act for allegedly engaging in a public fight.

On count three, they face common nuisance charges under Section 137 of the same Act for allegedly acting in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

All three denied the charges after they were read and interpreted in Wolof.

Magistrate Sambou ordered that the two minors be represented either by their own counsel or by State-appointed counsel. The accused were remanded at the Jeshwang Juvenile Wing pending further proceedings.
