Man In The Dock For Obtaining Money By False Pretence

Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Monday heard the case against one Landing Jarju from Busumbala, who is charged with obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to Section 288 of the Criminal Code Cap 10:01 Volume 3, Laws of The Gambia.

According to the particulars of the offence, Landing Jarju was accused of involving in land deal in 2023 at Jamburr and other locations in the West Coast Region. He falsely representing to Pap Cessay that he was selling him a plot of land measuring 20 meters by 27 meters located at Jamburr. It is alleged that such representation was known by the accused to be false or that the land did not exist, and with the intent to defraud, he obtained D155,000 from Pap Cessay.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him in court.

Deputy Superintendent Buteh Sawaneh, prosecuting on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, applied for an adjournment to allow time to secure witnesses for the case. He did not object to the accused person’s bail application.

The court adjourned the matter to 1st September 2025 and granted bail to Landing Jarju. Bail conditions include surrendering two Gambian national identification cards or a passport, swearing an affidavit, and providing a sum of D160,000.
