GTSC Gets Top West Africa Transport Award

By: Fatou Krubally

The Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) has been honoured with a prestigious award recognising its excellence in safe, reliable and innovative public transportation, making it the first Gambian company to receive such a distinction in the regional transport sector.

The award, conferred by Aquaba Travels in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission and African Travel Quarterly Magazine, was presented at the 8th Accra WISEAU Travel Expo held in Ghana on 27th June 2025. GTSC now joins the ranks of notable West African transport giants like ABC Transport of Nigeria and Ghana’s State Transport Corporation (STC).

Speaking during a press briefing held on Friday at the company’s main depot in Kanifing, GTSC General Manager Seedy Kanyi described the award as a symbol of the company’s steady growth, digital innovation and contribution to regional integration.

“Our fleet has grown to over 100 buses within four years, thanks to the support of the Gambia government and our parent company, Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation. This milestone reflects our commitment to safe and affordable mobility for Gambians and our neighbours,” Kanyi said.

Highlighting recent achievements, Kanyi mentioned GTSC’s introduction of the TAMO Smart Travel Card for cashless ticketing and partnerships with local banks and digital payment platforms like Wave Gambia. He also disclosed plans to start routes to Guinea-Bissau and Conakry once road conditions improve, while discussions are ongoing to extend services to Bamako, Nouakchott and Freetown.

Famara Fofana, Senior Corporate Affairs Manager at Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation, described the recognition as proof of GTSC’s positive impact on road safety and regional connectivity. He noted that improved bus services have helped reduce road accidents and provided reliable transport alternatives for thousands of commuters.

“We urge the public to continue patronising GTSC. This award should motivate everyone at the company to maintain their excellent service,” Fofana said.

The event concluded with GTSC reaffirming its commitment to modernising public transport and supporting regional free movement goals under ECOWAS.

GTSC’s board and management expressed gratitude to staff, passengers, and the government for the continued trust and support, pledging to further expand services that strengthen Gambia’s role in West Africa’s transport landscape.
