GSSSA Cancels Planned Summer Athletics Inter-Regional Championship

The Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA) has called off its maiden planned inter-regional athletics championship, which was to be held at Bottrop School, due to the withdrawal of some regions because of financial constraints.

The association said in a statement that it is with deep regret that the Executive Committee announces the cancellation of the much-anticipated Summer Athletics Games, initially scheduled for Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2025 at Bottrop Senior Secondary School, Brikama.

“This historic event was set to be the first-ever Inter-Regional Championship, bringing together outstanding student-athletes and alumni from across six regions to compete in track and field events.

However, due to unforeseen challenges, including the last-minute withdrawal of several participating regions owing to financial constraints, we are left with only two regions able to confirm participation. Under these circumstances, and in the interest of maintaining the standard and competitive integrity of the event, the Executive Committee has made the difficult decision to postpone the championship until further notice,” the GSSSA said.

While recognising the disappointment this may cause to athletes, school representatives, alumni, sports fans, and the general public who have shown overwhelming enthusiasm and support, the association extends its sincerest apologies for this last-minute change and assures all stakeholders that this decision was made only after exhausting all options.

According to the association, it remains committed to promoting school sports and unearthing young talent across the country.

“We are actively exploring alternative arrangements to reschedule the event at a later date, once the necessary support and commitments are secured from all regions,” it stated.
