The youth of Makumbaya have begun clearing land allocated to them by the village Alkalo for a proposed multi-purpose sporting facility.
The youths, under the leadership of Ebrima Tamba, have been using the Makumbaya football field, which also houses the Makumbaya Basic Cycle School, making it challenging to hold football matches during school hours. The situation became more difficult when part of the football field was recently used for the construction of classroom blocks, making it impossible to host matches there.
The Makumbaya Youth and Sports Development Committee, led by Ebrima Tamba, turned their focus to the newly acquired land given by the community’s Alkalo specifically for a multi-purpose centre.
Since its acquisition, the youths, led by the Sports Chairperson, have cleared the land for the swift transfer of football and other related sporting activities to the new site. The exercise started with site clearing and was followed by levelling of the land, with a bulldozer hired from initial funds donated by Hon. Seedy SK Njie during the opening of the tournament named after him in Makumbaya.
Reacting to the allocation, clearing and levelling of the new site, Sports Committee President Ebrima Tamba thanked the Alkalo and council of elders for the allocation of a 200m × 200m plot to the youth of Makumbaya.
“To my strongest youths of Makumbaya, your collaborative efforts have made this dream a reality, and finally, we have a site we can call ours in Makumbaya. Together, we can pull mountains,” he said.
With these developmental strides, the Makumbaya Youth and Sports Development Committee aims to complete the football field as soon as possible. The erection of the goalposts is expected this weekend, with hopes of playing this year’s finals at the Makumbaya multipurpose centre.
