The Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) Wednesday commemorated the International Day of the Seafarer at the UTG Law Faculty Auditorium, under the global theme “My Harassment-Free Ship.”
The 2025 campaign calls for decisive action to eliminate harassment at sea by promoting a cultural shift across the maritime industry. It aims to raise awareness, encourage zero-tolerance policies, strengthen reporting systems, and empower seafarers with the resources to address and prevent abuse.
In his address, Abdou Sanyang, President of the Seafarers’ Association, emphasizes that the theme shines a light on an urgent and personal issue affecting maritime workers worldwide. “Harassment be it verbal, physical, or psychological has no place aboard our ships, in our ports, or within our maritime community,” he stated.
Sanyang called on all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to creating a safe, respectful, and dignified work environment. He urged authorities to increase the Gambian crew quota to 50% and to ensure Gambian seafarers are treated with dignity, particularly when transferred to Senegal for boarding fishing vessels.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Labour, Abdou Saidy referenced the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) definition of seafarers and highlighted the protection afforded to them under the Labour Act 2023. “Section 82 requires employers including shipowners to issue written contracts of employment,” he said. Saidy also noted the hazardous nature of seafaring and called for adequate medical support both at sea and ashore.
Mrs. Olimatou Danso Malang, Director of Legal Affairs at GMA, representing the Deputy Director General, described the day as a celebration of the resilience and sacrifice of seafarers who keep global trade moving. “This year’s theme brings attention to the dignity and wellbeing of the men and women at the heart of the maritime industry,” she said.
Danso Malang stressed that harassment based on gender or nationality can have long-lasting effects on mental health, morale, and safety. She reiterated GMA’s commitment to working towards a harassment-free maritime sector.
The event brought together key players in the maritime industry, reinforcing a shared responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of seafarers.
