As part of its routine monitoring mechanism, The Gambia’s Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure recently concluded a nationwide inspection tour of ongoing road construction projects. The inspection, led by the Minister himself, Honourable Minister Ebrima Sillah, aimed to assess the progress of infrastructure development, directly engage with local communities, and reinforce the government’s commitment to delivering modern transportation systems crucial for national integration and economic growth.
Across the country, residents expressed overwhelming appreciation for the road improvements, describing them as life-changing.
In Madina Misra (Kiang), Ebrima Gibba, the village Alkalo, shared the community’s relief and gratitude.
“We are really happy about this road. It has benefited us a lot, especially when it comes to transportation. There is a hospital near us, and now we can travel there easily. Without this road, that would have been impossible.”
Buya Touray echoed the sentiment, “This road has made a big difference in our lives. Before, getting to the hospital was a huge problem, especially if you didn’t have a vehicle. Now that the road is good, even if you don’t have your own car, it’s easier to find transportation. We are truly happy.”
Kaddy Camara from Dasilameh emphasized the road’s impact on vulnerable groups saying “It has really helped us, especially our children and pregnant women. The road used to be very bad. Now, even our livestock can move freely. Everyone in the community came out to welcome the road project because it means a lot to us. Before, if someone got sick, it was a struggle. But now, even at night, we can get to the hospital. We pray for long life and good health for those who made this possible.”
For Ebrima Gibba, the Imam of Madina Misra, added “This project has brought us so much joy. We thank the president, the minister, and the entire government. Even though our area was not part of the original plan, the president listened and helped us. We now have a road connecting Madina to Misra something we haven’t seen in over 50 years. We hope the road will be extended toward Yorokunda.”
On her part, Lassana Bajinka of Kiang Kemodu, the road has made basic life needs more accessible, disclosing that “Before this road, bringing a bag of rice to our community was a challenge. Our produce used to spoil, but now everything has changed. Even our fish stays fresh. The road has truly transformed our way of life.”
Nyimanding Camara highlighted how the road has improved mobility and time management.
“The road brings us happiness and relief. It used to be difficult traveling from Jara to Kandahar, especially without a motorbike. Now we can leave in the morning, return in the evening, and still have time to cook. It has made life easier.”
These testimonies reflect the deep impact that improved road infrastructure is having on daily life across The Gambia boosting access to healthcare, food distribution, education, and economic opportunity. As the road projects continue, expectations are high for further transformation in communities long cut off from essential services.
