Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Organising Secretary of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has called on the party militants to stay united and focus on the mission of ousting President Barrow.
He made these remarks in a video on his Facebook post on Saturday, following a leadership succession controversy as discussions escalate between UDP militants on who fits the position to succeed Ousainou Darboe, the party’s long-term flag bearer, as the 2026 presidential elections draw nearer.
He said the militants should not be divided on such issues. Instead, the UDP’s focus should be directed to winning the upcoming presidential elections as the incumbent and how pressing national concerns are addressed.
“Let’s unite and make sure that our party policies are sold to Gambians. We want to make sure that people are excited and happy with UDP to come and join the party, but that’s not possible if we are divided,” he emphasizes.
The KMC mayor expressed his disappointment in a manner of the controversy, stating that the divided discussion should not be directed or based on tribal politics.
“Please let’s all cease from tribal politics. Let’s support people based on their character, development, or track record. I am appealing to everyone to stop such conversation because tribal politics has destroyed this country and comes with a lot of problems,” he appeals.
He said the opposition should be talking about pressing issues affecting Gambians, such as shortage and high cost of cement, rising cost of consumables, employment opportunities for youth, irregular migration crisis, among others. He added that UDP should lead such discussions.
