The Banjul Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Magistrate M.L. Thomasi, has sentenced Ibra Gaye to a fine of D35,000 or, in default, two years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited drug.

Gaye was charged under Section 35(a) of the Drug Control Act 2003, as amended in 2014. During the court proceedings, the accused admitted to the charge and did not contest the evidence presented by the prosecution.

In delivering judgment, Magistrate Thomasi stated that the prosecution had laid down a solid evidential foundation linking the accused to the offence. “The accused attested to the facts narrated by the prosecution to be true and correct,” the Magistrate said.

Based on his plea and the facts, the court convicted and sentenced Ibra Gaye accordingly.
