In the wake of recent devastating market fires, President Adama Barrow has called for a unified approach between the government and opposition-led local councils to modernize and relocate markets.
He emphasized that this challenge cannot be tackled by the government alone.
During his visit to fire-affected markets in Brikama, Latrikunda, and Serekunda’s Sandika on Wednesday, April 3, President Barrow stressed the importance of partnership with local councils, many of which are under opposition control.
He stated, “We cannot move forward unless we collaborate. The councils oversee the markets, but they represent the government. It is in this partnership that we must work together to find solutions. These markets need modernization, and both the government and councils should think about how best to relocate them and improve their conditions.”
The President’s comments underscore the critical role of councils such as the Brikama Area Council and the Kanifing Municipal Council, both led by the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). His call for cooperation comes amidst a politically charged atmosphere where opposition-led councils hold significant influence in local governance.
President Barrow also highlighted that The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has completed a preliminary assessment of the recent fires, with a comprehensive report forthcoming to guide government intervention.
He emphasized that the victims of these market fires are Gambians contributing to national development, and supporting them is a top priority.
In addition, the President reassured traders that any relocation efforts would prioritize their needs, ensuring that they operate in a more comfortable and secure environment. This initiative marks a potential shift towards more collaborative governance, bridging political divides to address urgent national issues.
As discussions on market modernization and relocation progress, stakeholders and citizens are eager to see concrete actions emerge from this proposed partnership between the government and opposition-led local councils.
