NA committee to vet appointment of Sulayman Samba and Mary Samba

Sulayman Samba and Mary Samba appointment to the judiciary commission has been referred to the National Assembly public appointment committee for scrutiny.

The pairs appointment motion was tabled before lawmakers by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General Dawda Jallow, who said: “the motion is brought to pursuance of section (145 ) of the constitution of the Republic of The Gambia precisely (145d)and (145e).”

He added: “(145d ) states that , there shall be a judicial service commission which shall consist of legal practitioner of at least five years standing at The Gambia bar nominated by the Attorney General in consultation with The Gambia Bar Association. And (e) states one person appointed by the president section (145, 2) states that the members of the commission other than members referred to in (a) and (f) shall be appointed by the president in consultation with the Chief Justice and subject to confirmation by the assembly.”

Meanwhile Majority Leader, Honorable Kebba K. Barrow who represented the House Speaker explained that: “it has been moved and seconded that the Assembly consider the appointment of Sulayman Samba and Mary Samba as members of the Judicial Services Commission pursuance to section (145 1d ,e and 145,2 ) of the 1997 constitution.

The assembly now referred the motion to, and confirm the appointments of the two members and report back to plenary.

Honorable Halifa Sallah, member for Serrekunda said it is important to be clearer on what they are voting on, while added that they are voting on the consideration not confirming it now.
