Fishermen say Chinese trawlers cutting fishing nets at sea

Fishermen and fish dealers in Tanji have accused the Chinese of cutting their nets at sea with their trawlers, a major reason for fish shortage in the village.

Fatou Sambou a seller at the Tanji seaside said the scarcity of fish is as a result of the Chinese trawlers cutting the nets of fishermen inside the seas and which has resulted to unnecessary shortage of fish in the village and country as well.

She disclosed that it affected them as the sea is their only source of income, where they get money and pay their children`s school fees and meet their personal needs, too.

Samba Sowe, a fish seller said: “it is not every time that there will be fish but sometimes there will be shortage of fish as a result of the Chinese trawlers which are cutting the net in the sea. When there is shortage of fish the price of fish increases rapidly to the point that we cannot handle it and that really affects us a lot.”

Matty Ngum, a staff of the Fishery unit in Tanji said should in case they receive such reports from fishermen and fish sellers “that the Chinese trawlers cut their nets in the sea, they will report the matter to the management.”

She added that: “the incident at Sanyang, which occurred recently, is affecting us here in Tanji, too.”
