Furore drivers have called on the Kanifig municipal council to work towards covering open gutters along the roads for safety purpose after the council top official advised for drive with care.

The spokeswoman Isatou Faal of the council earlier advised drivers to drive with care despite having open gutters along the roads, as she cited the uncovered gutters to have sewage during rainy season.

According to her, the gutters were once covered, but the reason why that doesn’t exist now is that during raining season the gutters will fill with water and cleaners won’t be able to clean it properly when it is cover.

However, drivers have encountered her remark, urging that it is the council’s responsibility to cover gutters in the municipality.

Sulayman Jarju a taxi driver at West Field said: “the gutters should be covered because it endangers the lives and properties of not only drivers but other people that frequent the area.”

Apart from rainy season “it is too dangerous to walk around the gutter especially at night when the electricity is off. KMC has to come up with right strategy to cover the gutter for the safety of the people, he said.

Lamin Sanneha pedestrian said “I have witnessed many cases where people accidentally fell inside the gutter here especially vehicles when they come around to buy Cash-Power from Nawec and most of them sustained injuries.”

He said: “any time a driver felt in the gutter the blame is always on him (such driver) sometimes they will say its careless driving which is not the case.”

Lamin Demba, and Kebba Touray both drivers said: “it’s government responsibility to protect the lives and properties of its citizens and should therefore not allow anything that will cause harm to the people.
