MPs ask National Telecom Company to reappear on December

Gamtel-Gamcel Telecom Company has been advised to reappear on 16 December 2019 for scrutiny of its 2017-2019 audited reports as the national telecom company sought to put its house in order.

The company failed to produce apt audited reports for scrutiny the public enterprise committee on Wednesday but later sought permission from the lawmakers to give them time and appear on 16decmeber.

The board members claimed freshman ship and assured to be working to addressing challenges facing the company.

After initial engagements, board members of the telecom company sought permission from the committee for them to put their house in order. Few minutes of internal talks among members of the house committee, unanimously granted request of the board but urged them to reappear on 16 December for further scrutiny and adoption.

“The decision is made that you will submit the activity report and financial statement of the year ended 31 December 2018 on the 16 of December 2019 for presentation an ultimate review,” chair of public enterprise committee, Halifa Sallah said.

We would want to emphasis that what is taken places just not an ordinary activity that it is meant to strengthen the controls so that your institutions will be viable, we will manage in an efficient, transparent manner  in ensuring that there is probity in each undertaken, chair of public enterprise committee, Sallah added.

Hon. Sallah advised it is important ‘we look at the issue from the angle of oversight what is the best means of ensuring security of tenure so that the appointing of authority will not simply remove those appointed on no just basis.’

Because we believe that if the controls are there and there is an adequate oversight, then there is greater independence in the decision-making process of the board, he added.

Gamtel-Gamcel board chair Amdou Tijan Jallow assured the committee their reappearing on 16 December.
